At Skygate we provide security consultancy to organisations. Our security consultancy work is headed up by our Chief Security Consultant, Pete Chown. Typically this involves us performing security audits. For example, a company has a particular project in mind and they want our input at the pre-design, design and post-implementation phases.
IT security is a vast topic and there is much to consider when you want to ensure that information or other resources are 'secure'. Organisations are now familiar with firewalls and anti-virus solutions but these are a tiny part of all the security issues that must be considered. There's little point in having the best firewall installed if someone can walk into your offices unchecked; or having a VPN (Virtual Private Network) that uses strong encryption but weak authentication.
Whenever possible we use BS ISO/IEC 17799:2000 to structure our security audits. Apart from the obvious benefit of complying with the international standard for information security it also means that companies are already prepared should they choose to apply for formal accreditation.
