You can keep your email private with PGP (or S/MIME). But what about your login sessions? Your FTP transfers? And not everyone uses PGP; do you feel happy that this mail can be intercepted between your mail reader and your mail switch?

SafeGossip aims to address these problems. It is an implementation of RFCs 2487 and 2595 (which define standards for using TLS[1] with IMAP, POP and SMTP). SafeGossip also provides implementations of the draft FTP and telnet RFCs. (Telnet support is not finished yet.)

SafeGossip is currently in alpha test. The next release will probably be beta standard. All the usual caveats about alpha software apply to SafeGossip, but if you would like to try it, you can download it here. You can also browse the manual here.

Please let me know how you get on with SafeGossip, even if you succeed at what you are trying to do. At the moment I am very keen to collect a wide variety of positive and negative experiences so I can see which areas of the package need further work.

If you would like to contribute to SafeGossip, I will be very happy to accept your contribution. You will get a mention in the AUTHORS file in the distribution. You will also get a nice feeling at the thought of all the system crackers that you will put out of business...

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in pc masters forum.

1TLS (Transport Layer Security) is the new name for SSL (Secure Socket Layer).
